THINK Studios Assistant Director
Job Description
Position Type: This is a year-round, full-time, salaried with benefits (overtime exempt) position.
Subject Matter & Projected Pay Range (per the D.C. Wage Transparency Omnibus Amendment Act of 2023): Experiential Learning, Apprenticeship Program Development and Coordination, Student Programming & Partnership Development: $65,000-$100,000
Position Description:
THINK Studios is Field's center for design thinking, fabrication, and creative problem-solving. It is both a physical space and a culture of learning: we asks students to observe carefully, define problems precisely, and ideate on solutions to address real, human needs. THINK Studios sits at the intersection of Field's deepest aspirations for teaching and learning: the idea that knowledge should transfer, that disciplines are most powerful in conversation with each other, and that students learn best by doing and making things that have real impact on the world. At its core, THINK Studios is about what happens when students are trusted with hard problems and given the time, tools and space to think them through.
The THINK Studios Assistant Director is a full-time, year-round position supporting the THINK Studios director in building and running an experiential learning program that connects students in grades 6–12 to meaningful opportunities within and beyond the classroom. The role spans four primary areas: coordinating student internships with community and industry partners; designing and implementing the Senior Capstone program; managing logistics for domestic and international travel programs; and supporting broader THINK Studios events and strategic initiatives. The person in this role is expected to develop and sustain external partnerships, serve as a liaison across students, families, host organizations, and faculty, and teach THINK Studios courses. This position reports to the Director of THINK Studios and is expected to provide support to THINK Studios initiatives, including assisting with program development, community partnerships, and student project coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
THINK Studios Support
• Provide support to the THINK Studios Director in program development, community partnerships, and student project coordination.
• Assist with THINK Studios events, programming, and strategic initiatives as needed.
• Help identify opportunities for connection between THINK Studios programming and student learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
• Support the development of and teach THINK Studio courses within the school year and summer.
Community & Partnership Development
• Build and sustain relationships with local, regional, and national organizations.
• Represent Field and THINK Studios at relevant conferences, workshops, and community events.
• Develop communication materials and resources to promote THINK Studios programming and opportunities to students and families.
• Coordinate all aspects of student internships, including matching students with appropriate opportunities, managing applications, and facilitating communication between students, families, host organizations, and faculty.
Senior Capstone Programming
• Design, coordinate, and implement the Senior Capstone program.
• Guide students through the proposal, planning, and execution phases of their senior projects.
• Coordinate logistics for diverse student projects, including those taking place on and off campus.
Travel Program Coordination
• Coordinate domestic and international travel opportunities for students, working with external providers and organizations.
• Manage logistics, permissions, communications, and risk management for student travel programs.
• Serve as primary liaison between travel providers, families, students, and faculty chaperones.
Qualifications:
• Experience coordinating internships, field placements, or similar student programming, preferably with middle and/or high school students.
• Proven ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with external organizations and community partners.
• Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, timelines, and stakeholders simultaneously.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfort communicating with diverse audiences including students, families, colleagues, and community partners.
• Experience working with adolescents and understanding of developmental needs of students in grades 6-12.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
• Commitment to equity and inclusion in all aspects of student programming.
• Flexibility and problem-solving skills; ability to adapt to changing circumstances and student needs.
• Experience with risk management, safety protocols, and liability considerations for off-campus student programming preferred.
• Familiarity with design thinking, maker education, or interdisciplinary learning approaches a plus.
Work Environment: Faculty may be asked to perform their work duties at home (in the event of remote learning) and/or on campus. In both settings, faculty are required to maintain a professional environment. While on campus, classes may be operating either in person or in a distributed setting. All faculty are expected to be present and accessible for the entire school day, regardless of the setting. This position may occasionally require evening or weekend hours for events, travel programs, or student activities.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, all faculty are regularly required to talk and hear. This position requires periods of sitting, standing, and walking (including climbing and descending stairs). Occasional lifting of materials or equipment up to 25 pounds may be required.
Travel: Some local travel is expected in this position for site visits to internship locations and community partner organizations. Occasional regional or national travel may be required for conferences or professional development.
