Walgreens and the Howard University College of Pharmacy are united in their commitment to train future champions in the community pharmacy arena. Participation in this residency program will encourage the resident’s creativity and enhance practice skills as they find ways to address unique healthcare challenges in the community pharmacy setting. The residency is based at the Walgreens health-system pharmacy located at Howard University Hospital. This pharmacy offers clinical pharmacy services for patients with complex disease states including (but not limited to) HIV/AIDS, oncology, and transplant. The community pharmacists at this site work closely with medical staff to provide optimal drug therapy for all patients.
This residency program provides a postgraduate training to prepare pharmacists for management and leadership for Walgreens specialty stores. This program seeks to develop a pharmacist that will be able to partner with any hospital system to provide essential transitional care services. This program will also produce a well-rounded professional who will have business acumen, a heightened awareness of regulatory issues affecting pharmacy practice and experience in providing practical pharmacy education for students.
Residency Activities
- Bedside medication delivery and counseling
- Disease state management programs in hematology, HIV/AIDS, oncology, transplant, and more
- Transition of Care for hospital discharge patients
- Serving as a preceptor for IPPE and APPE students
- Advocacy for local pharmacy policy
- Design and conduct a practice-based research project
- Presentations at regional and national professional meetings
- Executing marketing strategy for the promotion of patient care services
- Teaching Certificate Program
- Facilitation of lab lectures and simulation
- Didactic lectures for students
- Design and implementation of clinical services

Candidate Requirements
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education
- Active DC Pharmacy Intern or pharmacist license at the start of the residency program
- District of Columbia pharmacist license within 90 days of the start of the residency program

- Three professional letters of recommendation
- Letter of intent explaining why you are pursuing a community pharmacy residency and what you hope to gain from the residency program

- On-site interview (upon invitation)
- Presentation at on-site interview on a topic related to community pharmacy
- Registered with the National Matching Service (NMS).
